Description

Watermelon seed oil is extracted by pressing sun-dried watermelon seeds (best by a cold-pressed method). It is a common practice in West Africa, where the oil is commonly referred to as Ootanga oil or Kalahari oil.

Cold pressed oil from the seeds. Watermelon oil or watermelon seed oil is also known as Ootonga oil or Kalahari Oil. Watermelon seeds contain 22% oil, which is thin, dry, runny and soft and smooth and a clear golden yellow with a slightly nutty flavour, reminiscent of sunflower oil. It is a dry oil containing a high level of linoleic acid (an omega 6 essential fatty acid). It spreads easily and is absorbed relatively quickly by the skin.

When it comes to the skin, hair, and even internal health, watermelon seed oil is a win, win, and win situation. Watermelon seed oil is high in unsaturated fatty acids, dominated by linoleic (63%) and oleic (15%) acids. Compared to that of other melons, watermelon seed oil shows significant antioxidant activity, with 5% higher levels of tocopherols. Tocopherols are a family of vitamin E compounds widely praised for their ability to protect the skin from the adverse effects of oxidative stress, including photo-aging. Vitamin E also boasts anti-inflammatory properties, which do wonders for irritated skin.

Meanwhile, watermelon seed oil is loaded with essential proteins, vitamins, and minerals that enrich hair and skin. Its unsaturated fatty acids hydrate the skin, and, unlike some oils, it absorbs quickly into the skin, which means it is perfect for all types: dry, oily, or acne-prone.

Uses:
The light texture, moisturization capabilities and stable shelf life of Watermelon Seed Oil make it a highly suitable emollient in natural baby care formulations and light body emulsions. Unlike mineral oil that is a common ingredient in commercial skin care formulations, Watermelon Seed Oil does not clog pores or prevent the body from naturally eliminating toxins through the skin. The composition of fatty acids contained in watermelon seed oil helps to soothe and maintain healthy, nourished skin. It is recommended for use in skin care formulations for all skin types, including oily, dry, itchy, damaged and problem skin. Watermelon Seed Oil is also well suited for inclusion in hair care formulations as it is non-greasy yet highly moisturizing.
